Abstract

The article takes a look at the figure, work and most relevant approaches of the German artist Hans Haacke, who developed a scathing and profound critique of the foundations of the global art market. Haacke presents what art critic Arthur Danto (1987) described as an attack on the 'spiritual authority' of the art institution, which aims to turn dirty money into 'cultural achievement'. Rather than 'perverse' fusion with the everyday -in the postmodern way-, Haacke imposes a stark and objective mirror to the mafia-like practices, deceptions, abuses and pressures that economic power exerts on the artistic institution.
